American Friends of the Hermitage
American Friends was first established in New York in 1995. Today, The Hermitage Museum Foundation (USA), Inc. (“HMF”) is a 501(c) (3) corporation which contributes to the preservation and promotion of the museum and its collections.
The HMF raises funds for restoration and conservation projects, and secures the donation of art and artifacts for the museum. The annual Hermitage Dinner held in New York City supports the Art from AmericaTM effort to secure post-War American art for the museum’s collections. In addition, the HMF hosts educational outreach programs; supports exhibitions both in the U.S. and Russia; curatorial exchanges; and organizes an annual White Nights tour to the museum and St. Petersburg.
Projects implemented with the support of the American Friends of the Hermitage include: equipment for the Hermitage Theatre and Photo Laboratory (1996); financial support of the restoration of rooms in the General Staff Building and equipment for the storage of drawings (2000); restoration of the August Hall in the New Hermitage (2001); program for blind and sight-impaired children at the Restoration and Open Storage Facility Staraya Derevnya (2005); exhibitions in the Hermitage: Louise Bourgeois (2001) and Willem de Kooning. Late Paintings (2006), and the first Hermitage Week organized in cooperation with Sotheby’s in New York in 2004.
Hermitage Museum Foundation (USA) supported such important restoration projects as Equestrian Portrait of Alexander I by Franz Krüger; Adoration of the Magi by Rubens (2001); Classical Greek bronzes from the collection of Marquis Campana (2009); statue of the Resting Satyr; Swiss music box Monkeys-Musicians (2010); Titian’s Flight into Egypt; and tapestry The Healing of the Paralytic from the Acts of the Apostles series based on Raphael’s cartoons (2011).
In 2010, with support from the Hermitage Museum Foundation (USA) a unique collection of 105 metal and clay Urartu artifacts was donated to the State Hermitage Museum by Mr. Torkom Demirjian to honor Academician Boris Piotrovsky.
