Long-term development project for the Laboratory for Scientific Restoration and Conservation of Objects Made of Organic Materials

Under the first stage of the project, a sublimation dryer, a chemical washing bath, a magnetic mixer with heating, a refractometer and a Leister Hot Jet S hot air gun were purchased.

As part of the “Preserving Cultural Heritage Together” programme, master classes on restoration were held in Ulan-Ude, Vladivostok, Omsk and Yekaterinburg

The programme of professional internships for young restorers from the State Hermitage Museum

Under the programme, nine internships were provided for restorers from the following laboratories: the Laboratory for Scientific Restoration and Conservation of Graphic Art, the Laboratory for Scientific Restoration of Oriental Painting, the Laboratory for Scientific Restoration of Objects Made of Organic Materials, the Laboratory for Scientific Restoration of Glass, Ceramics and Porcelain, the Laboratory for Scientific Restoration of Works of Applied Art and the Laboratory for Scientific Restoration of Precious Metals.

A Carl Zeiss Stemi 2000-C stereomicroscope was purchased as part of the project.

Restoration of The Conversion of Saul by Paolo Veronese

The painting, created by Paolo Veronese (Paolo Caliari, 1528–1588) in the second half of the 1570s, entered the Hermitage in 1779 from the collection of John Udney, the British Consul in Venice. Previously, throughout the 17th century, it was in the gallery of the Counts Widmann at their palace in the Sestra Canareggio in Venice: in the inventory it is listed as one of the most valuable paintings in the collection. After completion of its restoration, the painting returned to its place in the Small Italian Skylight Hall of the New Hermitage.
