International Hermitage Friends’ Day

Published 14 December 2022

On 8 December 2022, as a part of the Hermitage Days celebrations, the Museum welcomed all Hermitage Friends to the Staraya Derevnya Restoration and Exhibition Centre for the traditional annual event, the International Hermitage Friends' Day.

The official part of the evening began with the word of welcome from Prof. Mikhail Piotrovsky, who told Friends about the main events of the past year in the State Hermitage Museum and thanked those who supported the museum in 2022.

Then Mikhail Guryev, Head of the Laboratory for the Scientific Restoration of Clocks and Musical Mechanisms, spoke a few words about the exhibition Clocks and Musical Mechanisms from the Collection of the State Hermitage Museum and the unique pieces put on display as part of it. He also made a brief introduction of the tricky yet fascinating process of restoring mechanisms.

Following a good tradition, according to which the Friends are always among the first to see all new museum displays and facilities, on that evening the guests were introduced to the new Hermitage exhibition: “The Emperor’s Wardrobe. To mark the 350th Anniverary of Peter the Great”, which had been officially opened in the Costume Gallery just a few hours earlier.

Introduction was made by the exhibition curator Nina Tarasova, who spoke of the Hermitage’s main exhibition of the year dedicated to Peter the Great, and made a special notice of the painstaking work of the restorers from the Laboratory for the Scientific Restoration of Textiles. The exhibition would not have been possible without their great work.

Following the official part, Friends were invited to see the exhibitions and take a walk around the Restoration and Open Storage Center .

The evening program ended with the cocktail in the Main Lobby.
