Meeting of the Hermitage Friends’ Club

Published 22 November 2022

On 17 November 2022, the Winter Palace became the setting for a special evening event held for members of the Hermitage Friends’ Club.

The meeting was devoted to a presentation of one of the main temporary exhibitions of the season – “Egyptomania. For the 200th Anniversary of the Decipherment of Egyptian Hieroglyphs by Jean-François Champollion”.

The occasion opened in the Field Marshals’ Hall with a welcome from Yekaterina Mikhailovna Sirakanian, head of the State Hermitage’s Development Service, who informed the guests about forthcoming events and planned innovations for those participating in the museum’s Friends’ Club.

Then the exhibition’s curator, Andrei Nikolayevich Nikolayev, deputy head of the Department of the East, told the Friends in detail about the new large-scale exhibition, about the highly interesting phenomenon that has been known as Egyptomania since the end of the 18th century, and about Jean-François Champollion and his great discovery – the deciphering of Egyptian hieroglyphics.

As the evening progressed, the guests were invited to view the display itself in the Forehall and Nicholas Hall.

We invite everyone interested who has not yet become a member of the Hermitage Friends’ Club to join and gain the opportunity to participate in meetings of this kind.
